John 13 17If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them.
What power these words! So many of us know so many thing; too many of us, it could fairly be said, know too much!
Yet the power in this statement, made by Jesus to his disciples after washing their feet, carries us right through the knowing and straight into the doing.
If knowing were enough, there would be a standardized test at the pearly gates. I would be fine with that; I’ve always been pretty good at standardized tests.
But Jesus says “you are blessed if you do them.” I’m taken quickly to James’s “faith without works is dead,” but then also to Galatians 6 where Paul tells us to “Bear one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”
On this day before Good Friday, know, then do.
