Maybe Jesus was a carpenter…

We went around the table, each of us sharing something we got from the devotional that had just been read.  Toward the end, most of us settled into repeating something like: “Take your problems to God; God can solve any problem.”

The final girl said, almost under her breath, “God can’t solve every problem.”

Without thinking, almost automatically, several of us said, “No, God can solve any problem.”

Talking with another adult shortly after this, we decided that perhaps we had responded too quickly.  Perhaps the girl’s frustrations were rooted in some things that God had not solved in her life.

Several minutes later, another adult approached me: “sure thing – she was dealing with some things that have happened to her and she has had no peace.  I’m glad I went back and asked her why she had said there were problems God couldn’t solve.”

Carpenters know, usually from experience, to measure twice and cut once.

Our lesson from the Carpenter: Think Twice, Speak Once.

  1. Great word Steve! What does James say? – “quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger.” Always convicting for me!
