Preparing for Lent

Last year Rachel and I gave up meat for Lent.  She never went back, remaining vegetarian ever since.

This year I have decided I will be reading Henri Nouwen during Lent. I’ve read a few of Nouwen’s books already, but it has been some time ago.  In one of the classes I took at Perkins School of Youth Ministry the leader for the week was John “Bear” Losey of Praxis Training.  John lead a fantastic set of sessions under the heading of “Doing Stuff on Purpose.”

During one of these sessions, he referred to a Nouwen book on prayer as beginning with the statement “Prayer is difficult.”

I was instantly reminded of Nouwen’s simplicity and depth. I had read The Wounded Healer, In the Name of Jesus, and  The Return of the Prodigal Son.

I will plan to read and reflect on one of Nouwen’s books per week of Lent.

What are you planning in the way of a Lenten Discipline?
