Looking for a Few Old Men?

I received this in the mail yesterday.

My first thought was “this has got to be for someone else, or intended for me to share with someone else.”

It was, but only in the sense that I am invited to get a friend to enlist with me.

Then I wondering if the USMC realizes they sent a recruiting postcard to a 46 year old United Methodist Clergy who is a pacifist.

From time to time I’ve come across rather anti-military, but mostly I want to encourage Christians to consider their Lord before allowing Caesar to tell them who to kill.

Perhaps I’ve mellowed, or perhaps I’ve grown a bit.  My heart goes out to all those men and women who intend to serve their country and are now on their third, fourth, or fifth consecutive tour to Iraq or Afghanistan.  I thought of the toll such tours are taking on their souls, their families, and, eventually, our nation.

So, then I thought that maybe, just maybe, if I did enlist I could take the place of one of those men or women, and maybe let them come home instead of spending another year over there.

I still don’t think they want a 46 year old clergy pacifist, but if it would help one soldier, I’ll have to consider it.

Are they really looking for a few old men?  The few, the old, the Marines?

  1. For what it’s worth, Steve, they need chaplains, too. And as a former sailor (Marine chaplains are Navy officers), I think you’d be a pretty good one.
